What Is Matter? We Explain the Smart Home Standard (2025)

Posted on May 27, 2025

The ideal smart Home expects your needs without interruption and responds immediately to orders. You No need to open a specific app Remember each appliance or the exact sound command and sound assistant combination that begins the latest event of your favorite podcast on a nearby speaker. Competing smart home standards makes your devices unnecessarily complicated. It’s not just too … okay, smart.

Tech companies try to strengthen standards by presenting their sound assistants as a controlling layer from above, but Alexa cannot talk to Google Assistant or Siri or control Google or Apple devices, and vice versa. (And so far, no environmental system has produced all the best devices.) But these mutual cooperation problems can be remedied soon. The first project is called chip (home more connected home than IP), open source interpraldi Standard Standard Issue Arrived in 2022. With some big tech names, such as Amazon, Apple, and Google, on the board, smooth integration can eventually reach.

Latest in May 2025: We have added specifications of the matter 1.4 and 1.4.1 for better multi -admin, energy management, and easy setup, and general progress for quality has been updated.

What’s the matter?

The matter enables different devices and environmental systems to play well. Device manufacturers must comply with the quality of the matter to ensure that their devices are compatible with smart home and sound services such as Amazon’s Alexa, Apple Siri, Google Assistant, and others. Smart Home Matter Matter, the matter, theoretically, allows you to buy any device and use a voice assistant or platform that you like to control. (Yes, you can use different sound assistants to talk to the same product.)

For example, without worrying about compatibility, you can buy a smart bulb from a matter and configure it with Apple Home Kit, Google Assistant, or Amazon Alexa. Right now, some devices already support multiple platforms (such as Alexa or Google Assistant), but the matter will increase the support of this platform and make your new devices faster and easier.

The first protocol runs on Wi -Fi and thread network layers and uses Bluetooth less energy for device setup. Although it supports different platforms, you have to choose sound assistants and apps you want to use. There is no central matter app or an assistant. Since the matter works on your local network, you can expect your smart home devices to be more responsible for you, and when your internet goes down, they should continue to work.

What makes the matter different?

Contact standards maintain the standard of the Alliance (or CSA, first Zigbi Alliance). Its membership (more than 550 tech companies), willing to adopt and integrate various technologies, and the fact is that it is an open source project. Interested companies can use the Software Development Kit (SDK) royalty -free to add their devices to the environmental system of the matter. It is much easier than each smart home platform to confirm the devices individually.

The matter is a strong foundation for the departure of the Zigbi alliance. It is a success to bring the central smart home platforms (Amazon Alexa, Apple Home Kit, Google Home, and Samsung Smarttings) to the same table. It is optimistic that the whole board is smooth, but it has enjoyed the excitement by jumping into many smart home brands, including Yale in August, Stallery, and smart locks. Smart lighting in Belkin, CYC, GE lighting, Sinpad, Signal (Philips Hue), and Nanoleph. And others such as Arlo, Comacket, Eve, TP Link, and LG.

When did the matter come?

The matter has been working for years. The first release of the project chip was to be held at the end of 2020, but was delayed in the next year, it was nominated as a matter, and then contested to release the summer. After another delay, the matter 1.0 details and certification programs were opened in 2022. SDK, tools, and test cases were made available, and eight authorized test labs were opened for a product certificate.

The first wave of the substance -assisted smart home gadget was sold in the fall of 2022, and then we have seen a stable move. The first refreshment of the specification, the matter reached 1.1, May 2023 and contained largely bug fixes. Announced in October 2023, meter 1.2 included cooperation for nine new tool types, including refrigerators, robots vacuums, and air purifier, along with the current category improvement.

The matter 1.3 details were published in May 2024, including energy management, EV charging, and water management as well as support for new equipment, as well as oven, coketops and laundry dryers. It also improves casting, so after being able to put your phone on your TV, other smart devices, such as your robot vacuum, can send messages on your TV to warn you if they are stuck, for example.
