Study finds AI-generated meme captions funnier than human ones on average

Posted on March 20, 2025

It is worth explaining that AI models did not produce the pictures used in the study. Instead, the researchers used famous, pre -existing meme templates, and GPT -4 or human participants prepared the title for them.

No more memes, better memes

When the crowded participants ranked the memes, those who were fully created by AI models scored more than on average in humor, creativity and sharing. Researchers jointly describe a meme as a widespread ability to rotate, which is influenced by humor, relationship, and current cultural topics. He notes that this study is among the first people to show AI-generated memes that improve human-created individuals in these matrix.

However, the study comes with an important warning. On average, the AI-generation-powered memes scored more than those created by humans or with human beings with AI. But when the researchers saw the best individual memes, humans created the most interesting examples, and the cooperation of human-Aes created extremely creative and capable of shared memes. In other words, AI models produced permanently widespread appeal, but with humans – or without AI support, still make the most extraordinary individual examples.

This study also found that participants using AI aid produced significantly more meme ideas and described the process as a need for easy and less effort. Despite the promotion of this productivity, according to the mutual cooperation of human AI, the memes on average ME memes were not much higher than humans. As the researchers said, “The growing productivity of human AI teams does not lead to good results.

Participants who used AI aid report to feel less owned by their creations than solo creators. Given that the sense of ownership affects creative motivations and satisfaction in the study, researchers suggest that people interested in using AI should carefully consider how AI’s aid to creative works should be balanced.
