Since Trump took power on January 20, research funds from the National Institute of Health increased by more than $ 3 billion over the pace of funds in 2024, According to an analysis of the Washington Post.

Until then in March 2024, NIH awarded US researchers with a total of $ 1.027 billion to renew a new grant or competitive grant. This year, the figures are currently about $ 400 million. Similarly, financing for renewing the current grant without any competition reached $ 4.5 billion by this time, but this year it has fixed only $ 2 billion. Together, this slowdown is equivalent to a 60 % reduction in grant support for a variety of research.

NIH is the main source of financial support for biomedical research in the United States. The NIH grant supports more than 300,000 scientists in more than 2500 universities, medical schools and other research organizations in all 50 states.

Nearly, the amount of lost grant means that clinical trials have been stopped suddenly, scientific projects are being shelled, goods cannot be purchased, and experiments cannot be run. But, in the long run, it means delay in scientific progress and treatment, which can resonate in future generations. With the financial support, educational researchers may be unable to maintain staff or train younger scientists.
